Matt
“You can do this,” I whispered into Olivia’s ear as she stood in front of me on the platform. She was next in line to launch onto the cable, and I could feel her shaking under my hand on her side. “I’ll be right behind you.”
She shuddered. “Not close enough.”
The zip lining attendant had just turned to hook her harness to the cables that ran through the trees, and he stopped when he heard her speak. “You scared?”
Olivia chuckled nervously. “A little.”
“You wanna do a tandem launch?”
I quirked a brow at him. “A what?”
“I’ll hook you guys up together, and you can go at the same time. No big deal. Helps with the scared ones,” he replied, holding his hand up to his mouth and stage whispering as if she couldn’t hear what he said.
“Yep. Yep. Let’s do that,” Olivia answered before I could.
“Don’t have to ask her twice,” the attendant said as he proceeded to hook our harnesses to each other and to the cable above our heads. He positioned me in front of Olivia, and instructed her to wrap her legs around my waist. She did as she was told, and when we were all set to go, he told us how to take off from the edge of the platform.
“Wait, Matt, take a picture of the ground,” Olivia said suddenly.
“What? Why?”
She waved her hand impatiently. “It was one of the items on the list—‘a view of the ground from above.’ Now would be perfect.”
I shook my head. Leave it to Olivia to think about winning the scavenger hunt contest at a moment of total panic and adrenaline. She was literally strapped to me and a cable above our heads, ready to take off from a sturdy platform in the trees, and she wanted me to pause and take a picture. Sighing, I took out my phone, carefully aimed the camera over the edge of the platform, and snapped a pic of the ground. Putting my phone away, I turned my cheek in her direction.
“You ready?”
“No.”
“Really, no, or sarcastic no?”
She sighed, “Both.”
“Okay, let’s go.” Before she could react, I leaped off the platform.
Zip lining wasn’t a regular part of my life or anything, but I’d gone a few times when I’d come up to Big Bear with the family. As we flew through the air, heading towards the platform on the other side, I could practically feel Olivia’s heart beating against my back. It wasn’t a plunge-to-your-death kind of feeling like bungee jumping probably would be, so if you really took a second to look around, you realized how beautiful the scenery was and how cool it was to fly through it. I hoped she was having fun and taking it all in, but then I felt the front of her helmet touch my shoulder and I knew she had her face buried into my back.
“Liv,” I called to her, “look around. It’s cool!”
“I can’t,” she hollered back.
“You can, babe. Look up.”
I felt her helmet lift off my shoulder and she squeezed me tighter around my chest.
